{"id":4349,"date":"2018-09-12T04:20:34","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T12:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.caionline.org\/?p=4442"},"modified":"2018-09-12T04:20:34","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T12:20:34","slug":"community-associations-prepare-for-hurricane-florence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jerrybice.com\/wordpress\/community-associations-prepare-for-hurricane-florence\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Associations Prepare for Hurricane Florence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_0 et_section_regular\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_0\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_0    et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_0 et_pb_bg_layout_light  et_pb_text_align_left\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>Community association homeowners in the path of Hurricane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/\">Florence<\/a> are readying disaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caionline.org\/HomeownerLeaders\/DisasterResources\/Pages\/HurricanePrep.aspx\">preparedness<\/a> plans.<\/p>\n<p>Florence is forecasted to make landfall between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2018\/09\/12\/hurricane-florence-charges-toward-carolinas-with-potential-for-unbelievable-damage\/?utm_term=.12b9320aeee5\">South Carolina and North Carolina as a Category 3 or 4<\/a> storm late Thursday night or Friday morning and could stall over the region, bringing catastrophic flooding similar to what the Houston area experienced last year with Hurricane Harvey. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 1.5 million people are facing mandatory evacuation in coastal areas due to destructive winds and a dangerous storm surge, though Florence\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s impacts will be felt far inland too.<\/p>\n<p>Crane Pointe Homeowners Association residents Dennis and Susan McGaha have done everything possible over the past three days to secure their home in Hampstead, N.C., which is located in between Surf City and Wrightsville Beach, just a few miles from the coast. The McGaha\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s preparedness plan included securing all loose items\u00e2\u20ac\u201dfrom pool floats to flowers\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand adding window shutters and extra drain pipes.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the couple gathered their most valuable possessions: family pictures. Every framed memory now lies in a plastic box, enclosed in one of the most secure rooms: the laundry room on an elevated space. The couple also has a weeks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worth of sealed medicines and clothes.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to their neighbors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 preparedness it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a mixed bag. While some have already headed inland, others have not installed a single shutter, according to the couple.<\/p>\n<p>While homeowners like the McGaha\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s prepare for the worst, additional storms behind Florence also are threatening more of the East Coast as the Atlantic hurricane season hits its peak.<\/p>\n<p>Homeowners should include the following items in their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/build-a-kit\"> disaster preparedness prep<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Water\u00e2\u20ac\u201done gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Food\u00e2\u20ac\u201dat least a three-day supply of nonperishable food<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Flashlight<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 First-aid kit<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Extra batteries<br \/> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Manual can opener<br \/> <em>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2<\/em> Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery<\/p>\n<p><em>CAI encourages all communities and their residents to be ready for Hurricane Florence and beyond.
