The\u00c2\u00a0ban, which was due to go\u00c2\u00a0into effect this past\u00c2\u00a0April, was supposed to apply to units and the balconies outside\u00c2\u00a0them, according to reports. However, earlier this year,\u00c2\u00a0newly elected\u00c2\u00a0board members\u00c2\u00a0who smoke took control and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/condo-building-in-st-paul-voted-to-go-smoke-free-then-smokers-got-on-the-board\/487780761\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">voted to rescind the ban before it took effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 19-year resident of the\u00c2\u00a0Gallery Tower, Marge Romero, felt she should be able to do what she wants within the confines of her home\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand that includes smoking cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Romero and two other residents who opposed the smoking ban were elected to the board, and the following month the board voted to rescind the ban, citing it was a big overreach.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stopped other buildings from outright bans.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think there has been a definite trend toward banning smoking in condominiums, and I expect that to continue,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Matt Drewes, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnesotahoa.com\/default.aspx\"  rel=\"noopener\">CAI Minnesota Chapter<\/a>. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Efforts at redirecting, controlling, or containing smoke has had mixed results and have often fallen short of making all parties happy, and they come at a certain expense that the owners involved may not be willing or equipped to pay.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The fight at Gallery Tower may not be over yet. Residents like Jeff Tentinger and his wife, Robin\u00e2\u20ac\u201d who spent more than $8,000 on air purifiers\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwere stunned people needed to vote on a smoking ban in 2018, especially given the health problems related to secondhand smoke.<\/p>\n<p>States, cities, and other local governments have been moving to ban smoking in public places for years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/sites\/documents\/5_SMOKEFREE_FS_PREPHOME.PDF\" class=\"mtli_attachment mtli_pdf\"  rel=\"noopener\">Residents of public housing facilities<\/a> in the U.S. can no longer smoke in or near the buildings in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/smoking-banned-in-public-housing-nationwide-effective-today-2018-07-31\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">new rule that went into effect July 31<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many community associations have been outlawing the practice in common areas and on amenities but letting owners continue to smoke inside their units.
